How to Best Use the 4-Year Sample Plans

These 4-Year Sample Plans are designed to help students plan a course of study to complete their degree program in four years. The plan given for each major is not a required course of study, but is one example of how students may plan their own course of study by taking 15 credits per semester, and interweaving of their General Education requirements with their major requirements, to finish in four years. It is important to remember that some GE and Major requirements overlap. If a course can be counted for both GE and the major, then students can take more electives to fulfill their overall degree credit requirements.

Students should check the catalog for the academic year that they entered UH Hilo. The catalog shows the total credit hours, upper level credit hours, general education, and major requirements for each degree program. Students can also use the Program Check Sheet provided to double check that they are meeting all of the major degree requirements and the GE Check Sheet to double check they are meeting all General Education requirements. The Sample Plan may be downloaded and modified to accommodate course offerings and to suit the student’s own preferences for his/her personalized course of study.

In addition, students should consult regularly with their advisors and keep abreast of their progress by monitoring their personalized program on STAR.
