F-Classification Faculty Guidelines for Contract Renewal, Tenure and Promotion
June 18, 2026
Subject: F-classification Faculty Guidelines for Contract Renewal, Tenure and Promotion
In January 2024, the University of Hawaiʻi revised Executive Policy EP 5.221, Classification of Faculty, and established a new Faculty (F) classification under Attachment 1: Classification of 4-Year Faculty, effective August 1, 2024.
This memorandum provides clarification regarding contract renewal, tenure, and promotion for newly hired faculty appointed in the F classification.
At this time, separate F-classification guidelines for contract renewal, tenure, and promotion have not yet been formally developed and approved. Therefore, until such guidelines are adopted, faculty appointed in the F classification whose primary duty is instruction shall continue to follow the existing instructional faculty guidelines applicable to I-3 through I-5 faculty: "Guidelines for Applying for Contract Renewal, Promotion and Tenure for Tenure Track Teaching Faculty."
This includes use of the current Timetable, Personnel Action Calendar, Requirements for Promotion and Tenure, Requirements for Contract Renewal, and Appendix A, Application Forms.
This clarification is intended to ensure consistency, transparency, and continuity in the review process for newly hired F-classification faculty whose primary duty is instruction.
