On May 17th, 2021 an email message was sent out by the UH Vaccination Team on behalf of UH President David Lassner who announced that pending full FDA approval, “the University of Hawai'i System is adding the COVID-19 vaccination to its student health clearance requirements beginning in the fall 2021 semester.”
While the mandate for all students to be vaccinated has not yet been approved, we are moving forward to mandate vaccines for students who live on campus in the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year. Effective immediately, University Housing and Residence Life at UH Hilo will require all new and returning students who have been assigned to live on campus to complete the COVID-19 vaccination protocol prior to their move in day. The first day of move-in’s is Tuesday, August 17th, 2021.
If you haven’t already been vaccinated, you are strongly encouraged to complete the COVID-19 vaccination protocol at any location with any of the currently available vaccines as soon as possible. Persons are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after completion of a two-dose Moderna or Pfizer series or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Based on the date of fall 2021 move in and the type of vaccination you choose, to be fully vaccinated, students must complete the COVID-19 vaccination protocol by the following dates:

University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo will be accepting documents starting July 6th with additional details forthcoming before then. Similar to existing health clearance requirements, students will be able to submit exemptions for medical and religious reasons.
