Tokyo Travels

Growing up, it was always my dream to study abroad in Japan as I come from a Japanese-Hawaiian household. This blend of cultural influences has fueled my passion for exploring the intricate connections between politics, culture, and society in Japan. Embracing the opportunity to immerse myself in Japanese society, language, and culture, I was excited to deepen my understanding of global perspectives and enhance my academic pursuits through studying abroad in Japan. My study abroad experience in Japan has been nothing short of exhilarating, filled with unforgettable moments that have left a mark on my journey. From the vibrant streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Kyoto, every day has been a new adventure.

One of my most memorable memories abroad was doing a day trip to Ibaraki prefecture (about 3 hours away from my dorm) with one of my friends. While in Japan, I got into collecting goshuin, which are red stamps that you can obtain at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. In Ibaraki, there was a famous shrine called Oarai Isosaki Jina with a tori gate in the ocean that I wanted to visit. What should have been a simple visit turned into a crazy adventure, as the entire day it was pouring rain, which my friend and I were severely unprepared for. Additionally, due to Ibaraki being more countryside, there was less public transportation available. Getting there was a whole ordeal in itself, as we had to catch a special local train, and at one point, got onto the wrong bus accidentally. Despite the struggles it took to get there, we were able to see the famous tori gate in the ocean and visit the shrine for a goshuin and goshuincho (goshuin collecting book). Even though we were soaking wet all day, it was such a fun and memorable experience. This experience has taught me that it is the many unexpected events during your time abroad that make it so enjoyable and worth it. While things may not always turn out how you expect, the best parts are the memories you make along the way with valuable friends. This journey has not only expanded my worldview but has also given me a treasure trove of memories that I will carry with me.
