My Unforgettable Experience

Carrie Soo Hoo
Semester at Sea, Worldwide

This past spring semester, I had the fortunate opportunity to participate in the Semester at Sea program where we study on a university ship that travels to twelve different countries. Life on the ship was busy, exciting, and constantly changing. We were never in the same place at the same time in respect to both space and time. As we circumnavigated the world, we moved across an organic latitude line around the globe passing different time zones, waters, continents, countries and cultures.

My most memorable moments lie in the time I spent and the conversations I had with the people I met throughout my travels. In Burma, while my friend and I ate at a restaurant, we met a university student who worked there. We met some of his family. We played guitar and talked for hours. We ended up returning to the restaurant every day we were there. At first, our conversations focused on the cultural differences between our two countries, but after a while, we talked to each other as friends. The memory will always stay with me.
