DL Faculty Professional Development Opportunities

When it comes to creating quality online courses, we know that everyone is different when it comes to how they want to learn about doing it. Below are some great Professional Development (PD) options that are available to fit your own personal style and schedule.

Additionally, you’re encouraged to complete the UH Hilo Quality Online Course Certification Process. In addition to assuring high quality online courses and programs, faculty completing the certification process have found it to be a rewarding, informative, and educational experience. The certificate can also be included in the contract renewal, promotion, and/or tenure dossier.

Join in the New Innovation Playground Series this Fall Semester!

Innovation Playground: Research, Explore, Investigate. The UH Online Innovation Center will be offering monthly opportunities to test out and explore a wide range of educational technology tools with colleagues across the UH system. While less formally structured than a webinar, take this unique opportunity to ʻImi Aku, ʻImi Mai (research, explore, investigate) together in a fun and welcoming environment. This semester’s Innovation Playground series will focus on artificial intelligence.

Professional Development Program: Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility!

Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility Training screenshot. Kapiʻolani Community College has announced the launch of a new professional development program focused on Digital Accessibility! Learn about fundamental accessibility concepts, digital accessibility principles, designs, best practices, tools for evaluating accessibility, and pertinent resources for creating accessible digital documents and online course sites. Accessibility is a highly important topic that can be somewhat technical and a bit overwhelming – the aim is to demystify basic accessibility concepts and make digital accessibility approachable and relevant to the work you do. Open to all UH employees, the program is a 7-module, self-paced asynchronous learning resource in Laulima with the option to complete a competency assessment to earn a digital credential. So feel free to hop in and complete the training on your own schedule.

VoiceThread Live and On-Demand Workshops

UH Hilo Quality Online Course Certification Process

Step 1 - Complete the Preparing to Teach Online at UH Module

(Note: If you completed and received a certificate for the TOPP or TOPP To Go! program you can proceed to step 2.)

This introductory, self-paced module was designed by the UH Online Innovation Center (UHOIC) to assist faculty and staff in reviewing a wide range of topics and concepts related to online learning presented in an interactive and engaging online learning environment. Topics such as engaging tools, best practices, distance learning regulations, and policies are covered in this module.

Estimated time: This self-paced module is estimated to take 5-10 hours to complete. If participants choose to focus more on certain content areas or assignments, it may take longer.

Step 2 - Complete a Course Self-Review

Using the Quality Online Course Review Rubric (download this form fillable Word (.docx) file), complete a self-review of your course:

The University of Hawaiʻi Online/Hybrid Course Review Form

  • If your course meets the standards within the rubric, contact the Distance Learning Team at uhhilodl@hawaii.edu to request a meeting for a final quality online course review and certification.

  • If your course does not meet the standards within the self-review, you can:

    • complete the “Preparing to Teach Online at UH” module, and/or
    • complete individual workshops through the UH Hilo Academy, and/or
    • meet with a member of the UH Hilo Distance Learning team for one-on-one guidance.

Step 3 - Complete a Course Formal Review for Certification

  • When your course meets the standards within the rubric, contact the Distance Learning Team at uhhilodl@hawaii.edu to request a meeting for a final quality online course review and certification.
