DL Faculty Professional Development Opportunities
When it comes to creating quality online courses, we know that everyone is different when it comes to how they want to learn about doing it. Below are some great Professional Development (PD) options that are available to fit your own personal style and schedule.
Additionally, you’re encouraged to complete the UH Online Quality Course Design Review. In addition to assuring high quality online courses and programs, faculty completing the certification process have found it to be a rewarding, informative, and educational experience. The certificate can also be included in the contract renewal, promotion, and/or tenure dossier.

Lamakū Discovery Series and Support Session Webinar Recordings
The Fall 2024 Discovery Series and Support Session webinar recordings, hosted by the UH ID PLC, focused on essential features of Lamakū (Brightspace by D2L) for faculty new to the learning management system. Topics followed the flow of building a course, such as content development, activity and assessment, and gradebook setup in a themed manner.
Lamakū Instructor Essentials Training Course and Help Resource
The Lamakū Instructor Essentials course site, created collaboratively by the UH ID Professional Learning Community (PLC), serves as a self-paced one-stop shop to assist faculty and staff in migrating, managing, delivering, and assessing course content in Lamakū. While this course is not exhaustive, it aims to serve as a quick reference guide for mastering the basics of Lamakū. This course is a continuous work in progress and will be updated with additional topics and information.
After logging into Lamakū, you should see it right away when you log in on the Lamakū organizational homepage. This is an asynchronous resource so it can be accessed at any time and there is no time limit or expectations/pressure.
Professional Development Program: Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility!
Kapiʻolani Community College has announced the launch of a new professional development program focused on Digital Accessibility! Learn about fundamental accessibility concepts, digital accessibility principles, designs, best practices, tools for evaluating accessibility, and pertinent resources for creating accessible digital documents and online course sites. Accessibility is a highly important topic that can be somewhat technical and a bit overwhelming – the aim is to demystify basic accessibility concepts and make digital accessibility approachable and relevant to the work you do. Open to all UH employees, the program is a 7-module, self-paced asynchronous learning resource in Laulima with the option to complete a competency assessment to earn a digital credential. So feel free to hop in and complete the training on your own schedule.

AI Explorer Badge
The new AI Explorer Badge is designed for UH faculty and staff who are interested in exploring AI tools and integrating them into online teaching and learning. Earn the badge by attending training; incorporating AI into your work to improve teaching, learning, or productivity; and share your experiences with the UH community.

EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through knowledge, resources, and community-building opportunities. To create a profile (if you do not currently have one already set-up) follow the steps below:
- Visit the Educause website and click the Login button.
- Search for "University of Hawaii" and select "University of Hawaii." You will be prompted to authenticate with your UH username.
- From the “Organization” drop-down list, select “University of Hawaii Systems Office.”

VoiceThread Live and On-Demand Workshops
VoiceThread provides instructor-led training covering the basics of using VoiceThread to more advanced topics such as universal design for learning. There is also a large categorized library of on-demand webinar recordings covering a wide-range of topics in specific interests such as Art, Language Arts/Literature, Nursing, Online Courses, and more.
Zoom Learning Center
Zoom provides on-demand courses, live training, and short videos designed to give you just what you need when you need it.
Zotero Basics Digital Badge
Zotero is a reference management software to manage bibliographic data and related research materials. Thereʻs now a new professional development opportunity available for faculty, staff, and students. The badgeʻs description is as follows:
"This badge recognizes individuals who successfully demonstrated core Zotero skills, such as adding, organizing, and working with references both within Zotero and in conjunction with word processing software."

UH Online Quality Course Design Review
The UH Online Quality Course Design Review is an online standards-based review process facilitated by the UH Online Innovation Center. The review provides the opportunity for instructors to submit their already-developed online course for review in order to improve their course design while receiving one-on-one instructional design support.
Upon the completion of the review process, instructors will receive a digital badge that recognizes course design meeting the quality standards, which is based on the Quality Matters nationally recognized rubrics.
Note: This process focuses on continuous improvement of effective online course design and is not meant to be an evaluation of online instruction.
