A New Found Passion

Marshall Cacoulidis
Massey University, New Zealand

Originally from Honoka’a, Hawai’i, this past Spring 2009, I had the opportunity to study abroad to New Zealand at Massey University in Palmerston North. I took the chance to get away from my comfort zone to help open my mind to new experiences. My life has been a constant journey, as I felt as though something was still missing in my life and I needed to find it. While in New Zealand I intended to continue my studies in biology, however things did not go as planned, so I chose to do something a little different. Subsequently, in my second semester at Massey University, I decided to take an art class, even though I’m not an artist. The friends I made helped to point me in the right direction.

The moment we had our first art exhibition, I knew what would become of me, great things were to come. Art has helped me to express how much I miss my home and everyone I love. The time away from my family, friends and my home helped me grow as a person. When I return to Hawai’i, I will have a greater appreciation for the ocean, land and especially those that I love. My journey to Aotearoa has opened my eyes and dreams to things I never thought possible. I am going to miss my new friends here and the experiences we shared, but I know I will see them again, maybe at my next exhibition.
