For Immediate Release

Great Leaps, the semester finale for all University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and Hawaiʻi Community College dance programs, presents a Preview Performance on Friday, April 29, and a Performance on Saturday, April 30. Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

The opening of the program will honor Earnest Morgan, the dance legend and founder of the UH Hilo Dance Program 42 years ago. Current UH Hilo Dance Ensemble students will perform a few of Morganʻs signature choreographic dances: “Mele O Kaho`olawe,” “Ku`u Home O Kahaluu,” and “For All We Know,” remounted by a former Morgan student, Kea Kapahua, who currently teaches Jazz and Pilates at UH Hilo. Kapahua has also created a work, for the Dance Ensemble, incorporating the influence of her Hawaiian heritage and legacy with her contemporary training for the Dance Ensemble.

Ballet classes honor the classical traditions of ballet with music by Delibes and Strauss. Annie Bunker and co-choreographer, Dori Yamada, pay tribute to the late rock legend David Bowie, performed by the HawCC Modern Jazz class. Aerial Dance graces the stage with work on trapezes and rings.

Two Senior Projects will be premiered by Jenna Acia and Kawehi Kanoho-Kalahiki. They bring their individual experiences, passions and dance styles to the culminating works of their time at UH Hilo.

This is an open seating event. Preview tickets on April 29 are $3.00 for all seats. Ticket prices for the April 30 performance are $7.00 General and $5.00 Discount for students with a valid ID and Children 17 years and under.
