A Letter from the Interim Chancellor

Interim Chancellor Marcia Sakai

Aloha prospective student:

I’m happy to have this opportunity to invite you to apply for a prestigious Chancellor’s Scholarship at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. You are among the best and the brightest high school students in the state of Hawai‘i and we would be proud to have you join our university community on this four-year scholarship.

At UH Hilo, we are a close-knit community where you will find mentors and friends who will be a part of your life for years to come. This feeling of ‘ohana will guide you and support you while you strive to reach your highest level of academic achievement.

You will have a diverse selection of academic courses, and lots of extracurricular activities, too. You may want to take advantage of research opportunities rarely offered to undergraduates at other schools, giving you a big boost for graduate school or entering a profession.
You will also have opportunities for internships with businesses and organizations in the local community. And there are many ways to volunteer your time for community service.

UH Hilo has one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse student populations of any university in the country. There is much value in this diversity, and during your time here, you will experience people, beliefs and ideas that will challenge your thinking. This will prepare you well for life in a global society.

On Hawai‘i Island, you will be studying in one of the most geographically, biologically and culturally rich places in the world. Whatever your major, your academic program will give you many opportunities to explore, study and work in our communities and island, preparing you well for the good work you’ll do after graduation. In addition, you will be living in a community where the preservation of Hawaiian and other Pacific cultures is a way of life. This experience will greatly enrich your life.

UH Hilo is a very special place that will inspire you to work hard and dedicate yourself to your studies and leadership activities. I would be so pleased to have you join us as a Chancellor’s Scholar. I encourage you to apply.
