The POLS/AJ department faculty members nominate and select the recipients of the following annual awards:

Regina F. Titunik Distinguished Research Paper Award

In memory of Dr. Regina F. Titunik’s contributions to the Political Science Department, the UH Hilo community, and her focus on improving the writing skills of students, each year the author of one distinguished research paper receives this honor with a certificate and small cash award.

Rick A. Castberg Award for Outstanding Graduating Senior

In honor of Dr. Rick A. Castberg’s contributions to the Political Science Department, UH Hilo, and the broader community, each year one distinguished graduating senior receives this recognition with a small cash award and certificate.

While being an active member of UH Hilo's Men's tennis team, Joshua Liu pursues a double major in Political Science and Communication with a minor in History. Since he transferred to UH Hilo in Fall 2020, he has been on the Dean's List every semester. Written for POLS 325 Legal Geography, Joshua's paper: Localism, Boundaries, Visual and regulation of Tohbi Hale Parking Lot, analyzes the spatiality of the parking lot at Tohbi Hale, an off-campus student housing, governed by a landlady, the dimensions of private/public space, and the boundaries of the legitimacy of the property.

Maya is graduating with a double major in Psychology and Administration of Justice and Certificate in Performing Arts. As a dedicated student with a sophisticated intellect, Maya has earned five consecutive semesters on the Dean's List. Following graduation, Maya hopes to use her psychology degree towards professional opportunities in the fields of forensic psychology, psychiatry, and/or mental health.


Willard D. Keim Memorial Scholarship

Keyword 'Keim' on UH Scholarship search

This scholarship endowment has been established by the family of the late Dr. Willard D. Keim to award annual scholarships to Political Science majors who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a full-time (12 semester hours or more) student enrolled at UH Hilo at time of application and during scholarship year.
  • Political Science major.
  • Record or promise of academic excellence; GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Record of school and community activities.
  • Scholarship is renewable, dependent upon continued satisfactory performance.

Tiffnie KakaliaTiffnie Kakalia Tiffnie Kakalia is a non-traditional student returning to school after receiving an associate's degree in Liberal Arts from Hawaiʻi Community College in 2013. She aspires to continue studying the fields of political science and law working toward an advanced degree at UH Mānoa. Her interests include land rights for native people, constitutional law, and the relationship land has with the health and wellness of kānaka ʻōiwi (Native Hawaiians). Tiffnie currently works as the Cultural Protocols Officer for the Department of Native Hawaiian Health and Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. She is a life-long resident of moku o Keawe and shares time between family homes in Hilo and Kona.
