Advising for Current and Prospective Psychology Students
Advising is a very important resource designed to help students with a variety of academic, career and personal issues that may be relevant to their course of study. It is highly recommended that students see their advisors at least once a semester to decide on courses, ensure academic progress and discuss their future educational and career options.
All professors in the Department of Psychology serve as academic advisors to undergraduate Psychology majors and provide consultations to students interested in becoming one. Each of our instructors can provide individual advising upon request. Additionally, each semester the department sets up advising sessions during the week preceding the first week of classes. Students are always welcome to meet with any Psychology faculty if they need advice.
How to Obtain Advising
- Undergraduate Psychology majors have assigned advisors, which can be found in their STAR GPS report. If you do not know who your advisor is, contact Psychology Department Chair Dr. Adam Pack , or contact the UH Hilo Advising Center. Please come to see your advisor during their office hours or contact them to set up an appointment. If your advisor is unavailable, please feel free to ask any Psychology faculty to meet with you for advising.
- Students interested in declaring Psychology as their major can do so via the Office of the Registrar’s Change Major Request Form.
- Transfer Undergraduate Psychology Majors can meet with Psychology Department Chair Dr. Adam Pack for advising or contact the UH Hilo Advising Center.
- Graduate students in the Counseling Psychology program should see their assigned advisors.
- Prospective graduate students should contact Dr. Charmaine Higa-McMillan , director of the MA program in Counseling Psychology.
For questions that are not related to the study of psychology and careers in psychology (e.g., tuition, transfer of credits, general institutional policies, student exchange programs, personal problems, etc.) please seek advising from the Advising Center . Numerous advisors and counselors located in the Student Services Building will be happy to meet with you either by appointment or on a walk-in basis.
