RISO Policies
Applicable UH Hilo RISO Policies
As part of your participation in a RISO registered at the UH Hilo campus, there are a variety of policies that you need to be aware of. In addition to the UH Hilo Code of Conduct, all student organizations must follow Board of Regents (BOR) Policies under Chapter 7 pertaining to student organizations and UH Hilo policies regarding RISOs. The BOR policies are UH system policies and, as such, are consistent for all 10 campuses while the UH Hilo RISO Handbook only applies to UH Hilo.
Board of Regents: Chapter 7
Please note that in the BOR policies, RISOs are referred to as Registered Independent Organizations(RIO) because other campuses allow for the creation of organizations outside of student organizations. UH Hilo does not recognize these organizations.
Chapter 7.203: States the provisions for all Registered Independent Organizations (RIOs), which at UH Hilo are Registered Independent Student Organizations (RISOs). Clubs are Independent of the University of Hawaiʻi system while being embraced as part of student life.
- RISOs are not directly supported through mandatory student activity fees.
- RISOs are not involved in the student governance process and do not represent or serve the entire student body on their campus.
- The University assumes no responsibility for the activities of a RISO. RISOs must fully inform its members and the public of its relationship to the University by including the following disclaimer in its publications and communication with third parties: “Although the registered organization has members who are University students, the registered organization is independent of the University and does not represent the views of the University. The registered organization is responsible for its own contracts, acts or omissions.”
For more information or to view the policy yourself please visit the BOR web page.
UH Hilo RISO Handbook
The newest version of the RISO Handbook was approved January 2017. Please be sure to read the handbook in its entirety before you apply.
If you would like a printed copy of the handbook, you can request it from the RISO Coordinator at uhhriso@hawaii.edu. Each RISO is allotted one printed copy per academic year.
UH Hilo Student Code of Conduct
Each student at UH Hilo is required to adhere to the UH Hilo Code of Conduct. Failure to do so could result in the termination of your participate in a RISO.
