What is Experiential Learning?
Experiential learning is an umbrella term for various types of work-based experiences that usually take place outside the classroom, but which build on, complement, and/or supplement the academic learning that takes place inside the classroom (NACE, 2023).
The various types of experiential learning include:
- Internships
- Apprenticeships
- Practicum/ Field placements
- Job shadowing
- On/ Off-campus original research projects
- Student Employment/ On-campus work study jobs
Key Aspects of Experiental Learning
- Active Engagement: Students actively participate in learning activities. This could include experiments, projects, simulations, role-playing, or field trips.
- Real-World Relevance: Experiential learning connects classroom learning to real-world applications. It helps students see the practical implications of what they are learning and how it can be used in different contexts.
- Reflection: After engaging in an experience, students reflect on what they have learned, their observations, and how it connects to existing knowledge or theories. Reflection encourages critical thinking and deepens understanding.
- Problem-Solving Skills: By facing challenges and solving problems in real or simulated environments, students develop problem-solving skills and learn to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.
- Skill Development: Experiential learning often focuses on developing specific skills relevant to the subject matter or profession. This could include communication skills, teamwork, leadership, technical skills, or creativity.
- Personal Growth: Students often experience personal growth through experiential learning by gaining confidence, becoming more independent learners, and developing a stronger sense of identity and purpose.
- Diverse Learning Environments: Experiential learning can take place in various settings, such as laboratories, workplaces, community settings, outdoor environments, or virtual simulations. This diversity helps cater to different learning styles and preferences.
