Subject:
Vegetation mapping Mauna Loa Tropical alpine habitat
Summary:
Native Hawaiian species of alpine flora along the access road that runs across the upper volcanic slopes of Mauna Loa, Hawaii increased from 5 to 22 from 1958 to 2008. This included 9 native species not previously recorded and 8 new alien species. This change may due to 1) continuing primary succession on weathering young lava substrates; 2) local climate change; and 3) increased vehicular access resulting car-borne dispersal of alien species.
