The Mitsuo Akiyama Archival Collection
The Mitsuo Akiyama Archival Collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, invitations, copies of programs, and other items related to the early development of astronomy on Maunakea, Hawaiʻi. Selected articles from the Hawaiʻi Tribune Herald were made available online through the generous support of the newspaper.
Mitsuo Akiyama, who was the Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi Chamber of Commerce, was instrumental in generating interest in and support of astronomy on Hawaiʻi Island. His collection was donated to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo by Shizue Akiyama and family. Permission to make the Mr. Akiyama’s archival collection available online was granted by the family with the hope that the information may be useful to researchers, students, and others interested in the early develop of astronomy on Maunakea.
