The TCBES program provides hands-on experience in both field and laboratory settings through coursework and your chosen research or internship project. You will develop strong interpersonal and communication skills through collaborative group projects, oral presentations, diverse writing assignments, and peer review. Throughout the program, we emphasize professionalism to prepare you to become a leader in environmental conservation at local, regional, and global levels.

UH Hilo is part of the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) allows master’s, graduate certificate, and doctoral students who are residents of WICHE member states to enroll in 900+ graduate programs at 60 public institutions outside of their home state and pay up to 150 percent of resident tuition. Do I need to find a faculty sponsor?
If you are applying to the Thesis Track, you must contact individual faculty members whose research interests align with yours and who agree to sponsor your application. It is recommended that you begin reaching out to faculty well before the application deadline. If you are applying to the Professional Internship Track, a faculty sponsor is not required.

How long does it take to complete the program?
Coursework is designed to be completed within 3–4 semesters, with additional time needed to write your thesis or complete internship requirements.

What are the entrance requirements?

Do I have to take the GRE?
No. The GRE is no longer required for admission.

Can I transfer credits?
Yes. Up to 6 credits may be transferred, subject to program approval.

When does the program start?
Classes for new students begin each fall semester.

How much does it cost to live in Hilo?
You should budget approximately $30,000 per year for Hawaiʻi residents and $39,000 per year for non-residents to cover tuition, books, housing, food, and personal expenses.

Is financial aid available?
Graduate assistantship positions may be available. Contact the program chair, Dr. Ryan Perroy (rperroy@hawaii.edu), or uhhtcbes@hawaii.edu for more information. You may also contact faculty and participating agencies regarding financial support. All students seeking financial aid must submit the FAFSA and may qualify for the Graduate Opportunity Grant. Do I need to write a Master’s thesis?
The Thesis Track requires coursework and a thesis based on original research. Meanwhile, the Professional Internship Track requires coursework, an internship, and research papers.
