Summary:
During the past few years, persons concerned with optimal use of the recreational resources of Hawaii have paid increased attention to the unique features of the Mauna Kea area. Act 30, S.L.H. 1962, directed that a study be made of Pohakuloa Camp and vicinity, to determine the manner and extent to which this public land should be developed for outdoor recreation. The purpose of this study is to: 1) find out what the area is like -- its natural environment, resources, and capacities for various types of recreational use; 2) determine what the present uses are, and what the types and dimensions of uses might be in the future; 3) measure the economic impact on the economy of the state and of Hawaii County if no further investment were made in the study area; 4) likewise measure benefits and costs if a proposed development plan were to be implemented over the period to 1980 and; 5) determine the feasibility of several commercial proposals -- a low cost vacation resort, a cable car to the summit, and the leasing of park facilities.
