Summary:
We review the interactions of fire and invasive species within grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, and forests of lowland and upland environments in Hawaii. Where possible, distinctions are made between dry and mesic communities. Wet forests are discussed separately. For each environment we describe the affected vegetative communities and discuss how native fire regimes and native ecosystems have been affected by nonnative species invasions. Where information is available, we also discuss potential opportunities for the use of prescribed fire to manage invasive plants and restore native plant communities. We conclude with a summary of the current state of fire and invasive species in Hawaii, the outlook for the future, and needs for further investigation.
