Summary:
This document gives a description of Mauna Kea, its geographical position, and its location with regard to latitude and longitude. A description of why Mauna Kea is a unique astronomical observing site, an inventory of the telescopes that are on the summit, a history of the site, as well as information regarding the cultural and symbolic dimension are also provided. In addition, information regarding the present use of the summit, the protection area known as the Mauna Kea Science Reserve, the state of conservation, a description of the context and environment, the archaeological/historical/heritage research that was done of the area, the main or potential threats to the site, and the management of the summit is also included.
