Summary:
The plant communities within a 500,000 ha study area on the island of Hawaii were mapped at two levels of resolution. The most detailed maps (1:24,000) show the distribution of actual plant communities. A total of 371 plant communities were recognized at this mapping level. The distribution of the potential vegetation units was examined in relation to rainfall and elevation. Disturbance of the native plant communities was also evaluated.
