Astronomical observatories Mauna Kea Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT)
Summary:
"A groundbreaking astronomy project has a few earthly obstacles to clear before breaking ground on Hawaii's most hallowed mountain." The article described the site selection of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Mauna Kea was chosen from 5 candidate sites because it is above the inversion layer and the very low humidity is ideal for adaptive optics. The TMT project has the potential to greatly advance the knowledge of the universe and beyond as well as being an important partner in local work force initiatives and STEM education in local schools. It also faces the challenge from the Hawaiian community as the summit is deemed sacred in Hawaiian culture.
