- The authors searched the historical records for snow falls on Mauna Kea (Maunakea), Mauna Loa (Maunaloa), and Hualalai, on the Hawaii Island from 1778 (when Captain Cook arrived in the Sandwich Islands) to 1870 before the Weather Bureau began to publish temperature and precipitation records of Hawaii in 1897.
