Summary:
At the request of David Welch, International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. (IARII), Kumu Pono Associates LLC prepared the following study that includes a detailed collection of archival-historical records, and selected oral history interviews, pertaining to the mountain lands of the Humuula, Piihonua and Waiakea vicinity of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The documentation comes from records found in both public and private collections, that have been gathered by Kumu Pono Associates LLC over the last fifteen years. The cited narratives include native accounts translated from Hawaiian language sources; the records of Kingdom and Government agencies dating from the 1840's to 1950's, and including communications documenting the development of the mountain roadways; journals of historic visitors; and records of the lessees and ranching operations on the mountain lands. This study is based on four previous studies conducted by Maly and Maly, pertaining to Mauna Kea and on-going development on the aina mauna (Maly 1997, and 1999; Maly and Maly, 2002a & b & 2003, and also includes new archival research and oral history interviews, not previously-, or widely-cited until preparation of this study.
