Summary:
Since its development as a port and naval base, Honolulu has introduced a number of species of ants, often as whole colonies, through merchandise and lumber from Oriental and American ports. This document lists 35 forms of Hawaiian ants that consists of six endemic species, nine endemic subspecies and varieties, and 20 pantropical vagrants. The six endemic species are all diminutive, blind or myopic, subterranean ants that are members of the biocoenose or "microgenton" family. All six species are essentially Old World forms of which five are closely related to East Indian and Papuan species. With the exception of one species, the nine forms of the endemic subspecies and varieties are of small stature with four of them being members of the microgenton family. While all are subspecies or varieties of Old World species, five are of Indo-Malayan origin. The third series that consists of 20 forms, or 57 percent of the whole Hawaiian ant fauna, is comprised of pantropical vagrants. All of these ants belong to the Indo-Malayan or Indonesian fauna with the single exception of one that is of neotropical origin and has only recently established itself in fernhouses in Honolulu. A number of ants that have been intercepted at the Quarantine Station in Honolulu are also listed.
