- Summary:
- Ten species of native birds found in the forests of Hawaii have become extinct since Cook's first voyage to Hawaii. Eight others are currently on the U.S. Department of Interior's Endangered or Threatened Species List. This report considers the status of four of these species, and makes proposals for management practices and research objectives which are felt necessary to restore each species to non-endangered status. Essential habitat for four species are proposed and are discussed as follows: Hawaii Creeper (Loxops maculatus mana), Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus coccineus), Akiapolaau (Hemignathus wilsoni), and the Ou (Psittirostra psittacea).
