Summary:
In recognition of the opportunities afforded by drilling through the flank of an oceanic volcano, the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project (HSDP) was conceived in the mid-1980s to core to a continuous depth of several kilometers in the flank of Mauna Kea volcano where petrological, geochemical, geomagnetic, and volcanological characterizations were recovered from a 1056 meter deep well. Due to the archetype of ocean-island volcanism, Hawaii was the natural target where the HSDP pilot hole drill site was near Hilo Bay on the approximately 1400 year-old Panaewa flow series from Mauna Loa Volcano. This document describes the preliminary results of this 1993 project.
