Summary:
The Hawaiian Rainband Project (HaRP) was conducted on the Big Island of Hawaii between July 19 and August 23, 1990. The study revealed that radar-observed rainbands offshore of the windward coastline are often embedded with stratocumulus cloud patches moving in from the northeastern Pacific Ocean. Most rainbands near the flow separation line form upstream within cloud patches that approaching the island as the trade winds deflect around the island.
