Summary:: In this study, the author explored the nature of variation in tissue elastic and osmotic properties in two endemic Hawaiian Dubautia. These are the D. ciliolata and the D. scabra, that exhibited an unusual pattern of ecological differentiation on the Island of Hawaii. The study was done at a site located at the 1980 m elevation along the Saddle Road between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea near Puu Huluhului. At one site of sympatry, the species were restricted to different lava flows, even though individuals of the two species may have been found growing within a few meters of one another. Since the plants were growing on two different lava flows were experiencing different tissue water deficits, the author examined: a) the relationship between the tissue elastic, the osmotic properties, and the diurnal turgor maintenance, b) the extent to which the natural hybrid between the two species exhibited intermediate tissue elastic and osmotic properties and c) the degree of phenotypic variation that existed in the tissue elastic and osmotic properties in one of the species.
