Haleakala National Park
- Summary:
- The purpose of this study was to determine the range of three Argentine ant species that occurs within the Crater District of the Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. These three species are the Iridomyrmex humilis, Hypoponera opaciceps, Cardiocondyla emeryi. Within this area, the Iridomyrmex humilis only occurred within 1 kilometer of the park headquarters and a nearby research facility, the Hypoponera opaciceps was found throughout the Crater District in small numbers, and the Cardiocondyla emeryi was only present at the head of Kaupo Gap. The possible impacts that these ant species had on the endemic, flightless insects of the park are also discussed. In addition, the C. emeryi is first reported in this paper.
