Summary:
Vicia menziesii Spreng., is a leguminous vine that is endemic to Hawaii and is the first officially listed endangered plant species. Formerly occurring across a large area in the upper montane-mesic forest habitat located on the windward side of the island of Hawaii, this species was presumed extinct until it was 'rediscovered' in 1974. With the primary factors responsible for the decline of this vine being the introduction of ungulates that caused excessive predation on the plants as well as continued logging and cattle grazing that occurred within the remnant range, it was felt that enhancing the survival of the V. menziesii was still possible. It was felt that this could best be accomplished by stabilizing the habitat that is located within the 1400 ha of the koa-ohia forest and by allowing the population to reestablish itself naturally.
