Summary:
Since interspecific parental care among non-brood parasitic birds is rare and since interspecific feeding within the Hawaiian honeycreepers (Drepanidinae: Fringillidae) is unknown, the objective of this paper is to document interspecific provisioning between two Drepanidinae species -- the Palila (Loxioides bailleui), and the Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus virens). During this study, an adult male Hawaii Amakihi was repeatedly observed feeding a fledgling Palila with 16-19 food provisions that were done within a 14-hour observation. While presumed biological parents were frequently seen nearby, the adult Palila were not observed feeding the fledgling.
