- Summary:
- This document describes the effect that atmospheric turbulence has on ground-base astronomy as it causes amplitude and phase fluctuations in electromagnetic waves, propagates through the atmosphere, constrains maximum telescope resolution, and degrades the images of the stars that are produced by the telescopes. This paper describes how adaptive optics (AO) is used to reduce image degradation that is associated with optical turbulence as experienced by the telescopes that operate on Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii.
