Astronomical observatories Mauna Kea Telescopes Weather forecasting Mauna Kea
Summary:
This document describes Mauna Kea, that is located on the island of Hawaiʻi, as a premier site for ground-based astronomy as it houses the world's largest astronomical observatory complex that is made up of thirteen telescopes. These include two of the world's largest optical/infrared telescopes in the world, that are known at the Keck I and Keck II, as well as the Gemini North and Subaru telescopes. While observing conditions are strongly influenced by weather conditions, this paper provides an overview of the unique forecast requirements and challenges that are faced by those who forecast weather conditions on Mauna Kea. In addition, progress toward meeting these challenges and opportunities for future research are discussed.
