Vegetation mapping Mauna Loa Ecology Hawaii Island
Summary:
As a means of clarifying the vegetation-environment relations and in an effort to classify the major ecosystems of the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, several topographic vegetation profiles were drawn in conjunction with a vegetation mapping project of the park. This was done as the east flank profile of Mauna Loa, an active volcano in Hawaii, and posed several questions that merited a second, more detailed qualitative investigation of this issue. However, before setting the stage for a quantitative and experimental analysis, questions were asked for which preliminary part-answers are offered in this paper. In addition, in an earlier paper that dealt with the high-altitude vegetation north of this profile, it was concluded that, as a general characteristic, almost each plant seemed to find its own niche. This inferred an absence or low degree of plant interaction.
