Summary:
This is a summary report of findings in cultural-historical documentation and oral history interviews for Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii based on two studies prepared by cultural resources specialist, Kepa Maly (Kumu Pono Associates). Between August 1996 to February 1999, Maly conducted two detailed studies on Mauna Kea. The first study conducted by Maly in 1998 reported on findings of archival and historical literature search, and included previously unavailable translations of native Hawaiian traditions of Mauna Kea and important survey documentation of features on the mountain (reported in the nineteenth century). The study was conducted at the request of Ms. Lehua Lopez, President, Native Lands Institute in partnership with various Hawaiian organizations and Kumu Pono Associates. The second study in 1999 was conducted at the request of Group 70 International, as a part of the update of the Complex Development Plan of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve and Hale Pohaku for the University of Hawaii. The 1999 study reported on the findings of a detailed oral history and consultation interview program, and also included a detailed overview of archival and historical literature pertaining to Mauna Kea and its place in Hawaiian cultural practices and beliefs.
