Summary:
This document describes comments that were made at a public hearing that was held regarding a draft Plan for Mauna Kea that was held in November, 1976. At this meeting, testimony and comments were given on the ten-page draft that was submitted to the Board of Land and Natural Resources that called for the Department of Land and Natural Resources to take more responsibility in an effort to conserve and protect the unique natural environment of Mauna Kea. Five management areas were deemed appropriate for protection as follows: The Mamane/Naio Forest Ecosystem Management Area, the Mauna Kea Science Reserve Management Area, the Special Natural Area and Historic/Archeological Management Area, the Silversword Management Area, and the Military Management Area. Special problems areas were also recommended for protection such as the site at Hale Pohaku that would consist of a mid-level facility for research activities on Mauna Kea and the summit access road. A recommendation that was made regarding electrical power for the observatories and support facilities on Mauna Kea is also included.
