This document describes how contractors and subcontractors underestimated the difficulties that one faces when working at the 13,700 foot elevation of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. Difficulties such as altitude sickness, a reduction in workforce efficiency, harsh winter weather conditions, and strange/unexpected difficulties, proved to be very costly for those who bid on the construction of a telescope on Mauna Kea in 1967.
