Summary:
Documents that were subpoenaed from to the W. M. Keck Observatory regarding their proposed "outrigger" telescope project revealed that spills of sewage, ethylene glycol, diesel fuel, and toxic mercury marred the safety records of telescopes on Mauna Kea. As a result, this document describes concerns that were voiced by Hawaiian groups regarding the effects that these spills had on the sacred waters of Mauna Kea. Also described are hearings that ensued not only regarding the Keck proposal but also regarding the University of Hawaii's management of the mountain, in general.
