Summary:
The emphasis of this review is on the arthropods that inhabit alpine aeolian zones such as on the summit of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. Here, three categories of arthropods are distinguished: a) permanent residents that are made up of predators and savengers, b) temporary residents that consist of migrants such as coccinellids and hilltopping Lipidoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera, and c) diverse allochthonous fauna that are composed of wind-borne derelicts, the arthropod fallout fauna. These groups of arthropods also consist of birds, reptiles, and mammals. The emphasis on this review was also based on studies that were done on the composition of alpine aeolian faunas, the arthropod fallout on which they depend, and the aspects of their physiology and behavior.
