Summary:
Two small near vent aa flows (one from Xitle, Mexico and the other from Mauna Kea, Hawaii) showing a conspicuous concentric vesicle foliation pattern in transverse section were used to investigate how anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) measurements relates to the internal structure of lava flows. This paper reports on the results of measurements that were taken from AMS specimens from these two lava flows and show that there is an almost perfect match between the macro-scopically observed vesicle foliation and the instrumentally inferred magnetic foliation. The results show an almost perfect match between the vesicle foliation and the plane containing the maximum and intermediate principal susceptibilities, or plane of magnetic foliation.
