About Kilohana

Our Mission

Kilohana promotes the learning and retention of students by encouraging students to become independent and motivated learners through supplemental academic instruction and academic skills development available through the Center staff and resources.

This is achieved utilizing peer to peer interactions, embedded tutoring, and access to academic resources. Peer-mentors coach students through course problems, guide students through course materials, provide feedback, model and demonstrate effective study skills, and help students develop confidence in their academic abilities. Kilohana also provides workshops and information sessions designed to enhance and extend students' academic and career opportunities on and off campus.

Our Vision

Kilohana provides all students a safe and supportive learner centered environment outside of the classroom which engages and encourages students to achieve academic excellence regardless of ability.

Our Values

Kilohana values are reflected in each interaction and activity we engage in with each student.

We are knowledgeable, professional, ethical, reliable, respectful, and helpful.

Who We Are

All Kilohana peer mentors are UH Hilo students selected for their dedication to helping others succeed and their academic achievements. All Kilohana peer mentors also complete a rigorous training program.

Kilohana peer mentors work with students from two locations on campus. These are the Math/Science/Writing Centers located in LRC 123 on the first floor the Edwin Mookini Library and the Computer Science Undergraduate Lab in College Hall room 11.

Kilohana emphasizes support for historically challenging classes and gateway courses essential for multiple majors by providing knowledgeable peer staff and other resources from a wide range of subjects.

Kilohana's primary mission involves peer staff helping student visitors become confident, independent, and self-motivated learners who will eventually be able to do their own work without a peer staff at their side.

The UH Hilo Student Conduct Code is in effect at all times in all Kilohana Centers and Kilohana sponsored events.
