Summary:
On June 1 and 2 1982, Science Management, Inc. conducted an archaeological reconnaissance survey of the Humuula Sheep Station and Puu Pa study areas, both of which were to be used by the 25th Infantry Division for field training exercises. The reconnaissance was conducted from a low-flying UH-1 helicopter. No significant archaeological sites were found in either area, except for those along the northern boundary of the Puu Pa study area, which had been reported by William Barrera, Jr. in 1974. In the Humuula Sheep Station study area, the report recommended that Army personnel be directed to stay out of lava tubes which lie immediately south of the area. It is possible that one or more of these tubes contained significant cultural material. In the Puu Pa area, the study recommended that Army personnel be prevented from entering the portion of the area north of the south side of Puu Pa cinder cone in order to avoid impacting archaeological sites there.
