- Summary:
- This paper is a continuation of the 1902 issue and contains a complete list of the birds of the Hawaiian Possessions with notes on their habits. As is true of the birds listed in the previous issue, the author's field experience is restricted mostly to the windward side of the Island of Hawaii, the largest and most extensively forested of the group. Many of the birds that inhabit the Island of Hawaii recur upon the other islands. While the change of environment, (food and climate), has been sufficient to transform many of them into specifically distinct forms, the habits of the related forms differ by little on the other islands and the songs still less. Observations of habits made on Hawaii Island apply to the allied birds of the other islands. In the case of species that were not observed by the author, the published accounts of Wilson, Rothschild and Perkins was used as a reference. The author described every species observed in the islands. Descriptions of these birds may be brief but will suffice for the identification of the birds. More detailed descriptions may be found in the works of Rothschild and Wilson, or in the key of Hawaiian Birds issued by the Bishop Museum. The list of birds contained in this 1903 issue are descriptions of the Ulaaihawane, Akepeuie, Ou-holowai, Parrot-billed Koa Finch, Ou, Palila, Laysan Finch, Hopue (Orange Koa Finch), Yellow-headed Koa Finch, O-O, O-O A-A, Peale, Belted Kingfisher, Pueo (Short-eared Owl), Io, Marsh Hawk, American Osprey, Akekeke (Turnstone), Black-bellied Plover, Kolea (Pacific Golden Plover), Kioea (Bristle-thighed Curlew), Ulili (Wandering Tatler), Pacific Godwit, Hunakai (Sanderling), Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Kukuluaeo (Knudsen's Stilt), Red Phalarope, Northern Phalarope, Moho, Laysan Crake, Alae Keokeo, Alae ula (Hawaiian Gallinule), Aukuu, Aukuu Kahili (Black-crowned Night Heron) and the Glossy Ibis.
