Summary:
This paper is intended as a complete list of birds of the Hawaiian Possessions, to date, with notes on their habits. It includes information on Hawaii as an Ornithological field, the obstacles to Ornithological studies in the Hawaiian Islands, the destruction of Hawaiian forests, the environmental changes disastrous to the Hawaiian birds, the faunal zones, the effect on native birds due to the presence of the Mynah bird, diseases of Hawaiian birds, the origin of the Hawaiian birds, the ornithological knowledge of Hawaiian natives, as well as the history of ornithological investigations in the islands. The author's field experience is restricted mostly to the windward side of the Island of Hawaii, the largest and most extensively forested of the group. Many of the birds that inhabit the Island of Hawaii recur on the other islands. While the change of environment, (food and climate), has been sufficient to transform many of them into specifically distinct forms, the habits of the related forms differ by little on the other islands and the songs still less. Observations of habits made on Hawaii Island apply to the allied birds of the other islands. In the case of species that were not observed by the author, the published accounts of Wilson, Rothschild and Perkins was used as a reference. The author described every species observed in the islands. Descriptions of these birds may be brief but will suffice for the identification of the birds. More detailed descriptions may be found in the works of Rothschild and Wilson, or in the key of Hawaiian Birds issued by the Bishop Museum. The list of birds contained in this publication were the Omao, Oahu Thrush, Kamao, Puaiohi, Olomao, Miller Bird, Elepaio, Hawaiian Crow (Alala), Akialoa, Iiwi, Akiapolaau, Nukupuu, Green Solitaire, Amakihi, Alawi (Anauanii), Olive-green Creeper, Akikiki, Kakawahie, Alauhiio, Mamo, Black Mamo, Crested Honey Eater, Akakani (Apapani), and the Laysan Akakani.
