Summary:
The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), a national research institute in Mitaka, Japan, is proposing to locate the Japan National Large Telescope (JNLT) within the summit area of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve. The proposed 8-meter optical/infrared telescope, will be the largest single-mirror telescope in the world. It will be unique among large telescopes because it will have a single, unusually large and very thin primary mirror. This will be the first time the Japanese government will construct a major Japanese installation outside its own country and the first international scientific collaboration of its kind for Japan.
