Summary:
The 2001 Hawaii State Legislature enacted legislation, Act 236, Session Laws of Hawaii (SLH) 2001, directing the Department of Land and Natural Resources to expedite discussions with representatives of Parker Ranch, K.K. Ranch, Inc., Schuman Carriage Corporation, and Botheilho Enterprises, Inc. and to identify and investigate all alternatives to (1) fairly compensate the ranchers for losses suffered as a result of the withdrawal of any leased lands; and (2) avoid providing exceptions to public land leasing policies. The Act also directed the Department to authorize lessees to utilize ten per cent of the remaining land for alternative agricultural use at no increase in the lease rent rate. This is the final report of these discussions and any proposed legislation.
