In 1968, the State of Hawaii leased the upper region of Mauna Kea to the University of Hawaii as a Science Reserve to be used for astronomical studies with the condition that the area also be available for other compatible activities. The major purpose of this Mauna Kea Science Reserve Plan is to assist the State in guiding future land use on the summit area of Mauna Kea to best serve the University's Institute for Astronomy as well as the people of Hawaii. The Plan encompasses an area of over 1,600 acres and was developed to demonstrate general suitabilities for future scientific facilities and recreation areas. This report documents results of this planning study including the process by which the Conceptual Plan was achieved and provides a synthesis of pertinent information used to substantiate the conclusions.
