During the period of 1837 - 1842, the author describes a trip to the Sandwich Islands. Reference is made to places that he visited such as Honolulu, Nuuanu Valley, Waikiki, Diamond Head, Manoa Valley, Pearl River, Ewa, and Waialua, on the island of Oahu; Koloa, Mouna Kahili, Valley of Hanapepe, the town of Waimea, the Wailua River and Village, Mauna Waialeale, Anahola, roads to Waioli, the valley of Kalihiwai, as well as the mountains, uplands and lowlands on the island of Kauai; the cities of Wailuku and Lahainaluna, and Mauna Haleakala on the island of Maui; the port of Kailua, Cave of Laniakea, Captain Cook's Monument, Kawaihae, Waimea, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and the city of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. Reference is also made to the rulers of the various islands during this period, such as Governor Kekuanaoa and the Premier Kekauluohi on the island of Oahu, Governess Amelia, (the former wife of Kamehameha's veteran general, Kaikoewa who was the ruler of Kauai), on the island of Kauai, King Kauikeouli and his wife Koloma, on the island of Maui, and Governor Adams on the island of Hawaii. The author also describes palaces, ports, forts, rivers, street scenes, churches, schools, mission houses, the influence of the American Missionaries over the common people, the state of religion as compared with the United States, the influence of Spanish Padres and American Missionary over their converts, the economy, wild cattle, sugar cane, soil quality, the availability of water, the weather conditions, burning forests, the appearance of the sea, the hospitality of the people, the health and treatment of women, criminal statistics, death scenes on the various islands, as well as an eruption from Mauna Hualalai and lava from Kilauea entering the ocean with indescribable grandeur. The author then describes a trip that he took through Central America on his voyage home.
