Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project Volcanoes Hawaii Island Geochemistry
Summary:
Hot spot volcanoes are a fundamental feature of the earth's crust and a direct expression of processes operating in the mantle. A proposal and request was submitted jointly by the University of California at Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and the University of Hawaii, for funds that would support a 325-day project to core and continuously drill a 4.0 km hole in the vicinity of Hilo, Hawaii, using a diamond-bit, wireline coring technology for the purpose of obtaining information relating to the nature of hot spots and their interaction with the lithosphere. The project proposed to include a comprehensive analytical program to assemble a complete isotopic, geochemical, and petrological data set.
