Lava analysis Mauna Kea volcano
Summary:
This is a delightful popular essay on the "meaning" of petrochemical study of lavas. Washington points out that a limitation in studying Hawaiian volcanoes is not seeing the great bulk of the volcanoes hidden beneath the ocean. He mentions possibility of trachyte underlying the basaltic shields. He disputes Daly's idea that Mauna Kea has all light rocks overlying heavy rocks. He notes that chromium is abundant in Hawaiian lavas, distinguishing them from lavas of other provinces.
